Research
Below are a few examples of my research, from analyzing COVID-19 data and policies to anti-candidate voting to examining the racial bias in U.S. media.

Louisiana COVID-19 Research
Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana
At PAR, I analyze COVID-19 data from the Louisiana Department of Health daily to research long-term trends and impact of coronavirus on the state of Louisiana. I compile daily internal reports on the state of the virus which informs our COVID-19 Resources portal, and twice weekly I publish COVID-19 Snapshots so policymakers and stakeholders and subscribers can stay up-to-date.

The Impact of Isolation and Quarantine Policy Strategy on the Prevention of COVID-19 Transmission and Death
Ogden Honors Thesis
This thesis serves as the capstone achievement of the Ogden Honors College curriculum. I successfully defended my thesis in front of a star-studded committee including Dr. Josh Grimm, Dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication, Dr. Leonard Ray, Director of the International Studies Program, and Dr. Touria Khannous, LSU's Arabic Program Faculty Head. I also presented my research at Louisiana State University's Discover Day - Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium, where I was awarded first place overall for my oral presentation in my division and first place in my college, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Through an overlay of public health policy decisions aimed at preventing the transmission of COVID-19 onto the timeline of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths, I performed sixteen segmented regression analyses of interrupted time series data to analyze the impact of these policies in Scandinavia and the American South.

Anti-Candidate Voting in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election
Beekman, S.; Johnson, D.J.; LeJeune, R.; Saab, E. & Tanguis, S.
With information from over 500 respondents, our team analyzed the concept of anti-candidate voting - voting against a given candidate as opposed to for a preferred candidate - and its impact on the 2020 presidential election.
We presented our work at Louisiana State University in December 2020.

Restore Louisiana
Emergent Method
For Restore Louisiana, I designed, fielded, analyzed and summarized large-scale, statewide surveys for large populations for Restore Louisiana utilizing Qualtrics and Excel.
The surveys reached over three thousand individuals and facilitated the completion of RELA's distribution of federal funding to impacted Louisiana families in the aftermath of the Great Floods of 2016.

Evolution of Media Perception:The Issue of Migration
Beekman, S.; Brandholm, G.; Penna, M., Pluta, B.; Stephenson, M. & Torres, P.
Our research centered around media coverage of two heavily-covered migration topics: the photo of Aylan Kurdi at the peak of the European Migration Crisis in 2015, and the arrest of Captain Carola Rackete in 2019. We analyzed media coverage of each event in Sweden, Italy, and the United Kingdom, and compared the word choice and tone of public response on social media.

I was slated to lead our research conference presentation at Castle Talks on Cross-Border Cooperation: The Migration Crisis - A Humanitarian Challenge for Border Regions in March 2020 in Strasbourg, France, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19. Instead, the work was presented at Louisiana State University's Discover Day - Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium in April 2021.

American Media in Black and White
Beekman, S.; Heinze, J. & Nößner, B.
Our research for this presentation focused on racial bias in crime reporting in American news media and followed the evolution of coverage with the evolution of the way news is delivered.
We presented our work at the Université de Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France in January 2020.
